Your yard is a reflection of yourself so you want it to make a lasting impression on everyone who stops by. If you are trying to sell your home then, your house’s curb appeal is even more important. Taking the time to do a little lawn maintenance can go a long way in the look of your yard and you don’t even have to spend too much money.
If you’re trying to establish a new lawn, or just repairing the current one, you need to know which types of grass grow best in your area.
A warm-season grass that establishes quickly, spreads fast, and is resistant to drought. Great for backyards that have a lot of foot traffic.
St. Augustine Grass
A fast-growing grass that performs better in shade than most other warm-season grasses. Does not do well with traffic and is susceptible to pests.
More resistant to pests than other types of grass but requires a lot of attention. Once it’s established, Zoysia grass can keep weeds and fungus out of your yard.
A low maintenance grass that does well in sandy soils but not well under foot traffic. It can tolerate high temperatures and grows thick to prevent weeds from springing up.
Now that you have chosen your grass type there are two ways of laying it down: Overseeding or sodding.
Sod is great for quickly establishing a lawn but it is also expensive and requires a lot of work. After it’s laid, sod requires a lot of attention and not every section may pull through, resulting in unsightly dead rectangles.
Overseeding is a method by which seeds are sprayed onto your yard via a pressurized hose. This is both faster and cheaper than sod. The major advantage of overseeding is that you can mix and match different types of seeds to give your grass different traits such as resistance to drought, pests, and diseases.
Flowers add a lot to a home’s curb appeal. It shows that you care about the look of your yard and that you put in time and effort to make it look good. Having a variety of colors makes a home feel warm and welcoming to potential buyers and visitors. You can incorporate them into your landscape, flower pots, hanging pots, or window planters.
Keeping up on your mowing says that you care about your yard. A freshly mowed yard is the first thing visitors and buyers will notice when they come to visit. For the best looking grass make sure you cut at a length of ⅓ the length of the grass. The proper length of your grass depends on the type of grass you have. You should always alternate your mowing pattern each time you cut so that the grass blades are cut from different sides.
